If that doesn't work, head here: to download Ubuntu. There are instructions on the page for putting it on to CD. From there, boot your PC with the CD in the drive and it should boot into Ubuntu for you (it won't actually install anything). Run the hack kit again using the instructions in the manual. As an aside, it's probably not advisable to rename the ROM zip file update.zip unless it tells you too in the instructions.
Also, looking at the first error you got, did you change the USB Cable or the SD Card?
